I use a limited palette to mix any color of the rainbow.  Once in a while I'll try what I call a convenience color, but even still I need to know what colors are in it so I know what it will do for my painting - i.e.: warmer/cooler,  darker/lighter, pure intensity/less intensity.   I was asked by one on my students today to further explain how to stay away from "mud" colors.
