Many Shades of Yellow

Kathleen Denis / 2 Comments

Today, in my class that I teach at Ocean Reef Art League, we took a look at the color yellow.  To me it's the hardest color to mix, yes even harder than greens.  It has the lightest value, yet has to be made darker in the shadows.  How can you do that and still have yellow?  Well it needs to become cooler, darker and less intense as yellow in the light.

So I made this chart and started with pure colors and added other primary and white colors to achieve variations.

Then I painted a block with a light on it so it created a warm yellow side and a cool yellow side.

If you look closely at the shadow side you'll see the reflective color blue painted into the cooler yellow, creating a greenish shade.

I abbreviated the colors in the chart so here they are:  WL=Winsor Lemon    WY =Winsor Yellow    CY=Cad Yellow   WYD=Winsor Yellow Deep   PR=Permanent Rose   UB=Ultramarine Blue   TB=Thalo Blue   W=White

Love your work...and the blogs, but I was unable to see the color abbreviations clearly on my iPad when I enlarged the block...maybe if written in sharpie rather than pencil??
Also appreciate so much your love for our LORD and how you add this into your work!

Have you already tried it? Do you like the quality of this paint? I've watched some common products in the local shop but I didn't like their quality.
